Why Art Direction Is a System, Not a Mood Board

Clients often come to us with a mood board and assume the hard part is finding images that match it. The hard part is turning that one-time feeling into rules someone else can follow without you in the room.
A real direction system defines the boring specifics: how close the camera gets, what light source is allowed, how much negative space stays around the product, what colors are off-limits entirely. None of that shows up in a mood board, and all of it is what keeps a hundred future photos looking like one brand instead of a hundred separate decisions.
If your art direction can't survive a photographer you've never met, it isn't finished yet — it's just a preference.
